City Transit Guide: Berlin BVG, Munich MVV, Hamburg HVV & Frankfurt RMV Zones & Tickets

How Germany's barrier-free proof-of-payment U-Bahn and S-Bahn networks work, how to validate paper tickets (Entwerter), and zone rules for Berlin AB/ABC, Munich Zone M/M-5, and Hamburg AB.

Barrier-Free Stations & the €60 Proof-of-Payment Rule

Unlike London or Paris, German U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations have no turnstiles or ticket barriers. You simply walk onto the platform. However, plainclothes transit inspectors (Kontrolleure) frequently check tickets inside train cars. Riding without a valid, stamped ticket—or holding an unvalidated paper ticket—triggers an automatic €60 on-the-spot fine (Erhöhtes Beförderungsentgelt).

Always Stamp Paper Tickets at the Red or Yellow Box (Entwerter)

If you buy a paper ticket from a platform vending machine in Berlin, Munich, or Cologne, check whether it needs validation. Paper tickets without a pre-printed timestamp must be inserted into the small red or yellow stamping box (Entwerter) at the platform entrance before boarding. Mobile tickets purchased in the BVG, MVV, HVV, or DB Navigator apps are pre-validated automatically.
