Germany Entry Requirements (2026): Schengen 90/180 Rule, EES Biometrics & ETIAS Guide

Passport validity rules, Schengen 90/180-day calculation, EU Entry/Exit System (EES) digital border kiosks at Frankfurt and Munich airports, and ETIAS travel authorization updates.

Passport Validity & the Schengen 90/180-Day Rule

Travelers from visa-exempt countries (including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan) may visit Germany and the wider 29-country Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day window. Your passport must have been issued within the past 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months after the date you exit the Schengen Area.

EU Entry/Exit System (EES) & ETIAS

At German external border crossings—including Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Düsseldorf (DUS), and Hamburg (HAM) airports—non-EU visitors register facial and fingerprint biometrics at automated EES self-service kiosks instead of receiving manual ink passport stamps. Once the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS, €7 fee, valid for 3 years) is active, visa-exempt travelers apply online prior to departure via the official EU portal.
